Flagstaff, Ariz. — While part of the roster raced in Huntsville, Alabama at the Southern Showcase, a second group of Coconino Community College men toed the line Saturday at the Firestorm Classic, hosted by Arizona Christian University at Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park. The Comets finished fourth of five teams with 130 points over the 8,000-meter course.
Mesa (Ariz.) CC won the team title with 15 points, followed by Glendale CC (62) and Arizona Christian (63). Nevada State rounded out the field in fifth with 132 points, just two points behind Coconino CC.
Freshman Max Reid paced the Comets, finishing 29th overall in 29:15.0. Jayden Albert was next for Coconino CC, placing 35th in 29:37.0.
Sabino Chatter finished 44th in 32:28.1, followed by Brydan Bennett in 49th at 33:06.3, and Mckennon Begay in 54th at 34:09.4 to round out the Comets’ scoring effort.
Racing two meets in two states on the same weekend gave Coconino CC a chance to get more of its roster valuable race experience — one contingent testing themselves against a nationally ranked field in Alabama’s heat and humidity, and another gaining experience against in-state competition at Sahuaro Ranch Park. Both groups will look to build on this weekend’s races as the Comets continue their push toward the postseason.
