Flagstaff, Ariz. – The ninth-ranked Coconino Community College women’s cross country team turned in a strong performance on Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, finishing third overall in the team standings. The Comets scored 73 points, just two points behind runner-up Arizona Christian (71), while host Embry-Riddle dominated the meet with a perfect score of 15. Glendale CC rounded out the field with 81 points.
Sophomore Cian Davis once again led the way for CCC, placing 10th overall in 21:27.27, nearly 41 seconds faster than her time on the same course last season. She was followed by sophomore Nizhoni Johnson in 23:35.92, while fellow sophomore Temyra Bia made her season debut in 23:49.39. Sophomore Peyton Yazzie (24:06.76) and Leah Redondo (29:01.68) closed out the scoring five, with Deondra Ashley also competing in 29:51.30.
The third-place team finish marks a step forward from last year’s Embry-Riddle Invite, where the Comets finished fourth overall. Head Coach Craig Hunt emphasized the progress his group is making week to week.
“Cian set a strong tone for us again, and it was great to see Nizhoni, Temyra, and Peyton all take steps forward. We were just two points out of second, which shows how close this team is to moving up another level.”
CCC will look to carry its momentum into the CSN Tri-State Challenge on Friday, September 26, at Floyd Lamb Park in Las Vegas, Nevada.
