Clark Breaks Men’s 8k School Record

Full Results Coolidge, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College men place 3rd at the NJCAA Region I Championships. Damien Clark breaks the 8k school record placing 16th as an individual. The CCC men took to the start line in a race doubling at the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Championships and the NJCAA Region I Championships. The comets successfully placed 3rd in the Region I Championship section and 5th in the ACCAC Championship section. Clark led the comets in a new school record of 28:17 over the 8k distance. CCC’s Kevin Pawesiema Jr. wasn’t far behind in a time of 28:34 good enough for 17th place. Damon Attakai, Alisseo Honanhi, and Tristyn Hatch finished in a line placing 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. Next up the comets will compete at the 2022 NJCAA Cross Country National Championships in Tallahassee, Florida on November 12th. Paradise Valley Community College won the Region I Championships with a score of 25. Central Arizona College took home the ACCAC Championship title with a total of 30 points.

Women Finish 2nd at Region I Championships

Full Results Coolidge, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College women’s cross country team finished runner-up at the NJCAA Region I Championships. CCC’s Hayley Burns wins the individual title in sprint finish. In their first season with a scoring team, and second season ever, the Comets’ race results are turning heads. The women made a statement today by finishing second at the Region I Championships, losing only to #2 nationally ranked team Mesa Community College. The comets placed five runners within the top 15 earning them All-Region honors. Burns out kicked Mesa’s Kate Brockman to win the Individual title in a 5k time of 18:03. Breana Biggambler, Whitney James, Nevaeh Scott, and Shaelyn Honahni finished 8th, 9th, 12th, and 14th respectively on their way to earning All-Region. The race also doubled at the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Championships where the women placed third. Burns’ victory makes her both the Region I and ACCAC individual champion. CCC’s Niki McCabe also competed, placing 20th in a time of 25:06. The comets will race next on November 12th in Tallahassee, Florida at the NJCAA Cross Country National Championships.

Men 5th at Mesa College XC Jamboree

Full Results Mesa, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College men’s cross country team competed at the Mesa College XC Jamboree where they successfully beat #22 nationally ranks Phoenix College. The comets competed against three nationally ranked teams at today’s Mesa College XC Jamboree. #4 Paradise Valley Community College, #7 Mesa Community College, and #22 Phoenix College were all in attendance. The un-ranked Comets were led by Kevin Pawesiema Jr with a 31st place finish and an 8k time of 28:28. Damien Clark was CCC’s second runner in 29:19, followed by Damon Attakai, and Tristyn Hatch in 30:50, and 31:05. Alisseo Honanhi rounded out the team scoring for the Comets in 57th place. CCC scored a total of 163 points to narrowly take down #22 Phoenix college by 1 point. #7 Mesa Community College won on their home course defeating #4 Paradise Valley Community College 34 to 54. Next up the men’s cross country team will compete at the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and NJCAA Region I Championships at Central Arizona College on October 29th.

Women Finish 3rd, Burns 1st in School Record Time

Full Results Mesa, Ariz – Coconino Community College’s Hayley Burns smashes her own school record with a 17:53 5k performance at the Mesa College XC Jamboree. The #7 nationally ranked comets faced #2 ranked Mesa Community College at the Mesa College XC Jamboree on their home course. The Thunderbirds took the victory but not without a fight from CCC. Burns led the charge with a 1st place finish in a course record and new school record of 17:53. She won with a margin of 21 seconds over Mesa’s Kate Brockman. CCC’s Nevaeh Scott and Whitney James both cracked the top 15 to finish 13th and 14th respectively. Shaelyn Honahni placed 31st overall, and Niki McCabe was the fifth runner placing 37th. Terrin Bia and Madison McCabe also competed for the comets placing 42nd and 49th. CCC’s team average time was 21:01 over the 5k distance. Mesa Community College won with a score of 28 points. Four year school Arizona Christian took second with 44 points. CCC took home third place with 76 points. The Coconino Community College women’s cross country team will next compete at the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, and NJCAA Region I Championships on October 29th at Central Arizona College.

Men’s Cross Country Makes History at Vaquero CAMPY Invite

Full Results Coolidge, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College men’s cross country team made history by producing the first team score in school history and placing 6th overall. In cross country, in order to produce a team score you need five individual runners to cross the finish line. Before today CCC men’s cross country, at most, had only had four runners compete in a race. Today marks a milestone in the program’s history as the Comets had five individual runners race in the Vaquero CAMPY Invite at Central Arizona College. The Comets produced a team score of 157 and averaged 31:13 over the 8k distance. The scoring squad consisted of student-athletes Damon Attakai, Damien Clark, Kevin Pawesiema Jr., Alisseo Honahni, and Tristyn Hatch. Attakai was CCC’s top runner in a time of 28:33 breaking the previous school record of 31:06 set by Mauricio Gonzalez last year at the National Championships. Mesa Community College won as a team with a score of 36 points. The comets will next compete at the Mesa College XC Jamboree in Mesa, Arizona on October 1st.

Burns Shatters School Record at Vaquero CAMPY Invite

Full Results Coolidge, Ariz. – Coconino Community College freshman Hayley Burns burst onto the scene with a 5k school record of 18:57. Burns took second place at the Vaquero CAMPY Invite and helped lead the team to a 4th place team finish. Burns’ time of 18:57 broke Shaelyn Honanhi’s previous school record of 20:14 set at the same race last year. CCC’s Nevaeh Scott finished 15th in a time of 20:22. Teammate Whitney James was close behind in 16th place in a time of 20:20:25. Honanhi was the fourth comet across the line in 23rd running 22:06. Sophomore Niki McCabe was CCC’s fifth runner placing 37th overall. “Hayley really showed her fitness today and made it known that she can compete at the highest level. It’s still early in the season and our training volume is still very high so I’m excited to see how everyone will perform later in the season with more training and rest.” said Head Coach Craig Hunt. Mesa Community College won the competition with 36 points. The comets will compete next at the Mesa College XC Jamboree in Mesa, Arizona, hosted by Mesa Community College on October 1st.

Men’s Cross Country Opens Season at George Kyte Classic

Full Results Flagstaff, Ariz. – Coconino Community College men’s cross country opened up their 2022 campaign at the George Kyte Classic at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Arizona. Buffalo Park, a popular location for the Comets to perform their training, was the site of their season opener hosted by Northern Arizona University. The comets competed over a 4.5 mile distance at nearly 7,000 feet of elevation against schools and individuals of all levels. From fellow NJCAA schools, to four year universities, all the way to professional runners, the Comets kicked off the season in what might be their most competitive race of the season. Damon Clark was CCC’s top runner finishing in a time of 29:28 of the 4.5 mile distance. He was followed by teammates Kevin Pawesiema Jr., Tristyn Hatch, and Mauricio Gonzalez. Freshman Damon Attakai did not compete but will be in uniform for the next competition. Northern Arizona University, the 2021 NCAA National Champions, won the meet with a perfect team score of 15. Other schools in attendance included University of Arizona, Grand Canyon University, Utah Tech, Fort Lewis College, Embry-Riddle University, Mesa Community College, Pima Community College, Central Arizona College, and Phoenix College. Coconino Community College will be in action next on September 10th at Central Arizona College for the Vaquero CAMPY Invitational.

Women’s Cross Country Opens Season at George Kyte Classic

Full Results Flagstaff, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College women’s cross country opened up their 2022 season at the George Kyte Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University. For the first time ever the CCC comets successfully produced a scoring team. The comets were led by freshman Hayley Burns with a 6th place finish in a time of 16:45 over the 2.5 mile distance. Burns’ time placed her over 20 seconds in front of the 2021 NJCAA National runner-up, Kate Brockman, who finished 9th. CCC’s Whitney James finished 23rd followed by Julia Clarke in 27th. The Comets fourth and fifth runners were Nevaeh Scott and Breana Biggambler in 31st and 38th place. Teammates Niki McCabe and Madison McCabe also competed. Their team score of 85 was good enough to earn them 4th place. Fort Lewis College won the Open Division with 29 points. Northern Arizona University won the NCAA Division I section with 16 points. CCC’s cross country teams will compete next at the Vaquero CAMPY Invitational in Coolidge, Arizona on September 10th.

Women’s Cross Country Competes at NJCAA Nationals

Full Results Richmond, Va. – The Coconino Community College women’s cross country team capped off their inaugural season at the NJCAA DII National Championships at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Virgina. The comets had three individuals compete over the 5k distance led by freshman Shaelyn Honahni. Honahni, the school record holder, finished in 67th place with a time of 21:04. She was followed by teammate Katlyn Potter in 111th place in a time of 22:13. CCC’s Niki McCabe rounded out the Comets runners with a placement of 154th in 23:37. “This was the first of hopefully many trips to the national championships for CCC. Being able to provide this experience for our student-athletes and see them succeed is priceless. The athletes today are laying the foundation for future athletes at CCC”, said Head Coach Craig Hunt. Lansing Community College won the team title with 78 points. Heartland Community College placed 2nd with 94 points. Mesa Community College rounded out the top three with 107 points.

Men’s Cross Country Caps Off Inaugural Season at NJCAA Nationals

Full Results Richmond, Va. – The Coconino Community College men’s cross country team capped off their inaugural season at the NJCAA DII National Championships at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Virgina. Freshman Mauricio Gonzalez raced over the 8k distance against 220 other competitors. Gonzalez placed 172nd in a new school record of 31:06. Gonzalez improved his own school record previously set at 32:02. Gonzalez became the first CCC male cross country runner to compete at the NJCAA National Championships. “This was the first of hopefully many trips to the national championships for CCC. Being able to provide this experience for our student-athletes and see them succeed is priceless. The athletes today are laying the foundation for future athletes at CCC”, said Head Coach Craig Hunt. Cowley College won the team title with 82 points. Daytona State College finished second with 102 points. Heartland Community College placed third with 115 points.
