Flagstaff, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College women’s cross country team has earned its place among the nation’s best, landing at No. 14 in the latest USTFCCCA NJCAA Division II Coaches’ Poll released Wednesday.
The Comets’ rise into the rankings comes on the heels of a strong September campaign. CCC kicked off September with a third-place finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational before backing it up with another solid performance at the Tri-State Challenge in Las Vegas, where the team showed both individual firepower and improving depth.
Head Coach Craig Hunt said the recognition is a reflection of the group’s collective effort.
“This ranking speaks to the work our women have put in since the summer. They’ve been steady, they’ve been focused, and they’ve earned the respect of coaches across the country. It’s a big step forward for our program.”
Sophomore Cian Davis has led the Comets at every race this fall, while freshman Haley Johnson and sophomores Nizhoni Johnson, Temyra Bia, and Peyton Yazzie have provided crucial support in the scoring five. Together, they’ve built a balanced lineup that has steadily closed the gap in top programs.
The Comets will now turn their attention to the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, California, on October 18, a meet that promises to be another key measuring stick as CCC looks to keep climbing the national ladder.
